New Team Base

Help fit out Ireland’s first purpose built mountain rescue base

After two years of fundraising and construction, the Glen of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue Team has started fitting out its new base in the Wicklow Mountains. The team has long dreamed of having somewhere to call home, a dedicated facility comprising of a fully enclosed and secured vehicle storage area, a rescue equipment cleaning, drying and storage facility, a training Room, and an operations room with all the necessary communications equipment to provide coordination and backup for complicated or extended emergencies. The team was originally formed in February 1983 by local people with a strong connection to the mountains after a number of incidents including a fatality had occurred in quick succession. Early in its history, the team became a Red Cross unit and has continued this bond over the years. The team has been involved in an estimated 1,200 call-outs over their 25 years in existence, averaging almost 1 call-out per week all conducted on a totally voluntary basis.

Phase 3 is at the planning stage and after all the standard utilities such as electricity, water, heating etc. are in place, it is now time to start setting up the base for it intended purpose. This entails setting up the garage area to house and maintain our vehicles and equipment, procuring necessary audio visual and communications equipment to fit out the training / meeting and operations room. It is our intention to produce a state-of-the-art operations room, similar to the professional emergency services in order to conduct mountain rescue operations in a modern, safe and efficient manner.

In order to procure the necessary equipment we are appealing to all kinds of commercial companies to donate equipment and expertise to help us out. In return we will grant Associate Membership and will invite all benefactors to take part in all our events and celebrations involving our new base specially the grand opening, the date of which will be announced later.
