Moon Light Challenge 2012

Moonlight Challenge

The Glen of Imaal Mountain Rescue Team seem to have pulled off another minor miracle in terms of the beautiful dry, clear conditions that made the recent Moonlight Challenge on last Saturday evening one of their most magical walks yet.

Each of the 400 participantsfog arrived in to the Glenmalure Lodge with a wide grin on their faces, having succeeded in traversing the 23km route across the mountains.  With sub-zero starry conditions above and tough terrain underfoot, for many it was indeed a challenge, and were very satisfied in completing the event in 5 hours or so.  The route began at the new Mountain Rescue Base in Trooperstown woods near Laragh, and followed the Wicklow Way south to Glenmalure.

The funds raised will assist greatly in the running of the mountain rescue team, and will be aimed at replacing their Mountain Rescue Van, which acts as a mobile command and control unit during emergency incidents.  The purchase and kitting out of this vehicle will now be possible due to the wide ranging community effort involved in organising and running this event.  The team expresses their thanks to all those who sponsored the challenge, those who participated and raised funds above and beyond suggested targets, those who freely gave of their time and equipment and to the 'Friends of the Glen Team' who've quietly worked away in the background to ensure the success of the event.
