Presidential Opening of the Glen of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue Base

Ribbon Cutting

The rescue team is delighted and honoured to have welcomed the President of Ireland to the recently finished centre, and to have him cut the ribbon and announce the completion of this project.  President Michael D. Higgins was very gracious in his speech on the work of the rescue teams both in Wicklow and throughout Ireland – “Through their efforts, through their leadership, these volunteers are reaffirming the old decencies in Irish life and drawing on the ethical values that are being forged by our talented and energetic people of all generations; they are demonstrating community cohesion, neighbourly cooperation and creative endeavour; they are renewing our Republic so that it does full justice to the values of fairness and participation”.

We’d also like to take this chance to thank all of those who’ve contributed to this project.  Without their support, none of this would be possible, and the team’s only regret is that there wasn’t enough space in the building to accommodate the entire range of people who’ve contributed to this project on the day.

As well as operating as a training centre, the building will be used by the Rescue Team to store life-saving equipment and vehicles and has been designed to be as environmentally-friendly as possible.  The building systems include solar hot water, rainwater harvesting, passive solar design, high spec insulation, heat recovery ventilation and under-floor heating.  When fully landscaped, the grounds will be planted with native trees and wildflowers.

The building was part funded by the Wicklow County Partnership (through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development: Europe investing in Rural Areas) and the Irish Red Cross.  A significant amount of the funding came from donations made by hill walkers/hill walking groups, local community groups, and members of the local community.

Team Portrait

The Glen of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue Team was formed in 1983, when the need for a quick response local mountain rescue team was identified. During that year, there were 3 accidents in the area in quick succession - one of which was fatal.

Our primary response area covers all mountains in county Wicklow. We are also asked to assist neighbouring teams such as Dublin/Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team and the South East Mountain Rescue Association outside that primary area.

The founding members of the team while seeking first-aid support and training, contacted the Irish Red Cross Society, and recognising the merits of such a connection, became a branch of the society.

The aim of this site is also to give an insight into the workings of a mountain rescue team and the organisation and evolution of organised mountain rescue in Ireland.

We endeavour to keep this site up to date, if you notice anything amiss or have any ideas, please contact the This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
