 Glen of Imaal Mountain Rescue

Team Portrait

The Glen of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue Team was formed in 1983, when the need for a quick response local mountain rescue team was identified. During that year, there were 3 accidents in the area in quick succession - one of which was fatal.

Our primary response area covers all mountains in county Wicklow. We are also asked to assist neighbouring teams such as Dublin/Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team and the South East Mountain Rescue Association outside that primary area.

The founding members of the team while seeking first-aid support and training, contacted the Irish Red Cross Society, and recognising the merits of such a connection, became a branch of the society.

The aim of this site is also to give an insight into the workings of a mountain rescue team and the organisation and evolution of organised mountain rescue in Ireland.

We endeavour to update this site up to date, if you notice anything amiss or have any ideas, please contact the This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Emergency means 112/999!

The Glen Team is an emergency service, which means that if you need our assistance just call 112 or 999.

How you can help

All team members give their time on a voluntary basis, and we rely on the generosity of the public for our operations. To make a donation from any bank just use back account number 59244771, sort code 90-65-07. Our registered charity number is CHY.10412.

Pager Appeal

To alert as many members as possible at the beginning of an incident the team uses the Eirpage paging system as well as mobile phone texting. While mobile phone coverage is excellent in urban and most rural areas, we are still dependant on pagers in the remote mountainous areas to get that important message through. Unfortunately, because of the reduced use of paging in the comercial world, paging receivers are becoming expensive and hard to get. The Team is in urgent need for your unused Motorola MemoExpress Pagers. If you have any sitting around in office drawers etc. they may be of use to us. Please contact the Communications Officer at noledaly@gmail.com  if you would like to donate them to the team.
